The global demand for energy is significantly supported by developments in offshore oil & gas and renewables. The speaker has contributed directly to offshore engineering practice since early 1990s through research and development, and provision of expert advice to construction and installation of some major structures. His research team has investigated the complex responses of lift system, lift components and knowledge-based engineering design system for heavy lift.

The lessons learnt form different construction techniques will be elaborated to review the impact of available construction equipment on successful completion and installation of offshore structures. The speaker will conclude with features of recent and future installation of offshore systems.

Professor CHOO Yoo Sang (曹耀生）is Adjunct Professor in National University of Singapore (NUS) and Distinguished Visiting Professor in Tsinghua University. He is Consultant of Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore.

He served as Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair Professor in NUS from 2009 to 2017. He was the 106th President of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) in 2008, and was IMarEST’s first President from Asia. He has also led IMarEST accreditation panels to accredit university degree programmers in China, Malaysia and Singapore.
Professor Choo was Founding Director of Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering (CORE) when it was set up in NUS in 2004, and then served as Director (Research) of CORE. He has served in many scientific and technical committees of international organiazations, and hosted as Chairman or Co-Chairman for some of the conferences and symposia. He served as President of Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore (2012 to 2015), and was the 106th President of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) in 2008, and was the first Asian academic to be President and Honorary Fellow (only 21 Honorary Fellow worldwide).

Professor Choo has received international and national recognitions, including Lifetime Achievement Award - Maritime Academics in 2009 and Lifetime Achievement Award in Marine & Offshore Engineering (2021). He and his research team have won best paper and engineering achievement awards. He received Honorary Fellowship of Singapore Structural Steel Society (in 2004), and Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Singapore (in 2024). He was honored with the Kurobane Award in 2015 from IIW Sub-commission XV-E for his outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of tubular structures.

Professor Choo is serving in international committees to develop or revise international standards. He has served as technical consultant or expert witness in major offshore projects and initiated or participated in international joint industry projects. He has served as Principal Investigator in R&D projects, including the Structural Integrity Management Programme on Offshore Structures, and Joint Industry Project on Grouted Joints.
