David R hayhurst is Professor of Design, Manufacture and Materials in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at The University of Manchester. He is the fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering. In 1985 Prof Hayhurst was elected to an established Chair in Design and Manufacture in the University of Sheffield. In 1992 Professor Hayhurst was appointed to an established Chair of Design, Manufacture and Materials at UMIST. At UMIST he served both as Head of Manufacturing and Design (1998-2001) and as Head of Department (2001-2004). In 1994 he was awarded the ScD degree by the University of Cambridge.
Prof David Hayhurst is renowned for his understanding of the mechanics of materials, and for pioneering techniques that led to the study of computational continuum damage mechanics (CDM). In recognition of distinguished work which has made or is making a notable contribution to any branch of materials science, Professor Hayhurst was awarded the Griffith Medal and Prize from the institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in 2011.
