Abstract
Natural terrain landslide deposits are often widely-graded coarse granular soils. Understanding the behavior of such deposits is essential in investigating the mechanisms of rain-induced slope failures. Through a series of laboratory tests, this seminar looks into the microstructure, compressibility, soil water characteristics and shearing behaviour of coarse granular soils in an integrated manner. Particular attention is paid to the effect of coarse content on the compressibility, soil-water characteristics and instability of saturated and unsaturated coarse soils under very low confining pressures (5 and 25 kPa).
